How long does it take to compost an animal?2023-09-01T21:56:18+00:00

There are several factors that depend on the length of time it takes to compost an animal. It depends on factors such as species and weight. Every species has different skin and bone densities; example cattle have a thicker leather type skin and strong bones and chickens have thin skin and soft bones. On an average it can take anywhere from 2-4 months to completely compost any species.

What happens to all the bones?2023-09-04T15:19:00+00:00

Great question!  During the compost process almost all the bones become brittle and break down. They resemble the image of a coral reef, brittle and small. Those bones compost into the final soil and provide nutrients such as phosphorus, one of the three primary plant nutrients, but also calcium and nitrogen. Some of the larger bones are re used in the compost process a second time. We look at these as lucky bones, they provide us with the needed pockets of air to create the perfect environment for anaerobic digestion.

What materials are used to compost?2023-09-01T21:56:45+00:00

We use multiple carbon materials; our two main products are: large wood chips that would have been otherwise burned and bulk coffee grinds that we recycle instead of being shipped to landfill. We do not use manure because it is extremely high in nitrogen. To compost you need the perfect ratio of carbon to nitrogen to ensure perfect anaerobic digestion.

Are the animals buried?2023-09-01T21:57:03+00:00

No. They are composted above ground and covered with carbon material and inoculants.

Is there odour?2023-09-01T21:57:26+00:00

Let’s put it this way, if you were standing beside the facility your comment would be wow, that is some beautiful soil! This is due to the stringent management of the facility and adhering and surpassing regulations set by governing parties.

Can we visit?2023-09-04T15:19:21+00:00

No. The first reason is simply that it would not be respectful nor ethical to be here other then to do conservation work. The animals here are people’s pets and family and they have been laid to rest peacefully.

The second reason is we frequently handle and compost many sick species with highly transmittable diseases. Our high level of bio security is why so many clinics, hospitals, facilities and farmers throughout Ontario trust us. We make sure our staff is trained in biosecurity and our trucks and equipment are cleaned, disinfected and sanitized to the highest standards.

When and where do the trees get planted?2023-09-04T15:20:34+00:00

The trees are planted in the spring of each year, depending on the weather mother nature gives us we usually plant between April and June to ensure their survival throughout our Canadian winters.

We plant the trees on the land surrounding the compost facility which is all protected land. We extend our planting along the 16-mile Creek in Halton hills where we do various other conservation projects such as soil revitalization, bird conservation and river restoration.

What happens with the final soil?2023-09-04T15:21:34+00:00

We spread the soil around the trees we plant and throughout the lands where we do our conservation projects. This nutrient dense soil assists in our soil revitalization projects.

It takes 1000 years to produce just a few centimetres of topsoil and 87% of life forms on this planet are sustained by an average of thirty-nine inches of top soil.  Soil is the life support of our food and agriculture and we rely on soil for 95% of the food we consume. United Nations says we have forty-five to sixty years of agriculture left and without change degrading soils will put our ecosystem, our climate and food security in jeopardy. On this course by 2050, 90% of all the worlds soil will be degraded.

We are passionate about having rich and fertile soil for our future generations.
